7 Tips to Prevent a Fire in Your Home

May 14, 2018 By Kelly Pagel

Dryer Vent

Did you know that according to the National Fire Protection Association there are more than 400,000 house fires across the United States each year? While you may be used to planning for inclement weather as a Wisconsin homeowner, fire safety is equally as important. As your local Green Bay insurance agents, we want to make sure you and your loved ones are prepared for the worst. In addition to investing in a comprehensive home insurance policy, we recommend keeping an eye out for common fire hazards around your home as well.

7 Common Causes of Home Fires That Every Home Owner Should Know

1. Candles

Adding candles to a room is a great way to create a welcoming atmosphere and leave a fresh scent for everyone to enjoy. But it’s important to remember that candles should always be burnt on a safe surface or in an approved container. Additionally, even though it may be tempting just to slip out quickly, candles should never be left burning unattended.

2. Electrical Overloads

An overloaded electrical outlet can easily begin to throw out sparks and cause a fire in your home. When using large appliances, remember that they aren’t usually designed to share an outlet with another appliance. And if you use extension cords, be sure to only use them as a temporary power solution.

3. Cooking Accidents

Most home fires begin in the kitchen, but in most cases, they could have easily been prevented. As a good rule of thumb, it’s smart to keep hand towels and pot holders away from the stove top as you work. Additionally, keep in mind that grease fires can’t be put out with water. They should either be smothered or put out with a fire extinguisher.

4. Flammable Liquids

The majority of heavy-duty household cleaners are extremely flammable and should always be stored in a safe place when not in use. Some other liquids like paints and solvents can also act as a fire starter under the right circumstances, so make sure you store them away properly and clean up any rags that were used along with them.

5. Dryer Vents

Remembering to clean out your dryer vents regularly is not only good for helping to boost the performance of your dryer, but it can also prevent fires from breaking out. When you combine heat and dryer lint, you’ve got the perfect combination for a fast-moving fire. So try to clean your dryer vents after each load.

6. Space Heaters

Portable heaters are ideal for reducing heating costs during those harsh Wisconsin winters, but if used improperly, they can quickly start a fire. When using your space heaters, always keep them away from furniture and other flammable materials and remember never to leave them running while unattended.

7. Outdoor Cooking

Once the springtime comes around, it is officially time to break out your backyard grill. But while it’s perfectly acceptable to store it close to your home during the off-season, you should always grill away from your house or other outdoor buildings. Additionally, over the course of the summer grease can quickly build up on your grill. Don’t forget to clean it regularly to avoid malfunctions and reduce your risk of a grease fire breaking out.
